Q: Why would I use the a la carte hourly rate? A: Some clients know that their student just needs 3-5 hours of professional help to touch up the college essay, get started on an important writing assignment at school, etc., so prefer not to purchase a package.
Q: If I go the “A la carte” route and then end up needing more hours, can we retroactively switch? A: Yes, if you figure out within the first month that you want to change your commitment, please let me know.
Q: Why would I purchase a package? A1: With Barton, clients always purchase a monthly package at minimum, then sometimes add 2-6 extra sessions a month. Once we mutually determine that your child is in need of reading intervention, it is a commitment of 18 months to 3 years, 2 times/week to work through the highly effective program with fidelity. Actual time depends on the student’s individual progress through the levels of the program. A2: With college application coaching, it is very likely that your student will need at least 10 hours in a semester to work through decision-making, college searching, and essay writing. So it turns out to be better, cost-wise, to purchase a block of hours.
Q: Why are your sessions different lengths of time for different services? A: Most students who need reading intervention max out energy-wise at one hour per session. Barton sessions require focused concentration from the student. Some students can manage 90 minutes. On the other hand, it is hard to make progress on college applications in less than two hours, at least for the first few sessions. However, each student is different, and I am willing to custom design packages.
Q: Do you have a sliding scale for your rates? A: I do not have a sliding scale. I have carefully researched local rates for similar services provided by educators with similar training, skills, and qualifications, and have determined my rates to be competitive, and in many cases, much less expensive. However, I also realize how, while appropriate, the fees still make my services inaccessible to some. Some families have been able to receive help from grandparents or other family members. If the cost is truly prohibitive, please talk to me about it.
Q: Can you customize your offerings? A: Yes … maybe! Just ask.
